Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max: What’s New Leave a comment

The short version

Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max in China on 23 September 2026, and has confirmed the 18 Pro series will launch globally later this year. That’s a big change from last year, when the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max never left China.

Both phones pair a 2nm Snapdragon chip with two 200MP Leica cameras, a second screen on the back and a privacy filter built into the main display. The 18 Pro is the compact one at 6.4 inches. The 18 Pro Max stretches to 6.9 inches and packs a huge 8,500mAh battery.

Design and display

The headline feature is a privacy display built into the screen itself. It narrows the viewing angle so people beside you can’t read your screen, and it can switch on automatically for banking apps and other sensitive content.

Both phones use flat OLED panels with ultra-thin 0.99mm bezels, a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to 4,000 nits of peak brightness. The 18 Pro’s screen is 6.4 inches and the Pro Max’s is 6.9 inches.

The rear screen from the 17 Pro series is back, now 2.7 inches on the 18 Pro and 2.9 inches on the Pro Max. It shows notifications, quick controls, mini-games and more than 100 app cards, including custom cards you can create with Xiaomi’s AI assistant.

  • Protection: Xiaomi Dragon Crystal Glass 3.0 on the front, aluminium frame, and IP66, IP68 and IP69 dust and water resistance.
  • Weight: 203g for the 18 Pro and from 235g for the Pro Max.
  • Colours: Black, White, Ice Peach Pink and Galaxy Blue, plus a see-through Transparent Edition.

Performance and software

These are the first phones on sale with Qualcomm’s new 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips. The 18 Pro gets the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, while the Pro Max gets the faster Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.

Both come with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage. To keep things cool under load, Xiaomi uses a cold-pump cooling system with a 4,355mm² heat-spreading area on the Pro and 5,513mm² on the Pro Max.

The phones run HyperOS 4 on Android 17, with a new customisable AI button for quick access to privacy controls, voice notes and mute mode. Connectivity includes 5G, NFC and UWB for digital car keys. Some AI features shown at the China launch are China-specific, so the global software may differ.

Cameras

The 18 Pro and Pro Max share the same Leica triple camera, so you don’t have to buy the bigger phone for the best photos. Both have two 200MP sensors on the back.

  • Main: 200MP Light Hunter 960 sensor, 1/1.28-inch.
  • Periscope telephoto: 200MP, 1/1.56-inch, with 3.2x optical zoom, up to 12.8x lossless zoom, 75mm portraits and close-up macro from 12cm.
  • Ultra-wide: 50MP.
  • Front: 50MP selfie camera.

Xiaomi also introduced a new imaging system that combines on-device and cloud processing, with three built-in camera styles.

Battery and charging

Battery life is where the Pro Max really pulls ahead. The 18 Pro has a 7,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, while the Pro Max has 8,500mAh, up from 7,500mAh on last year’s 17 Pro Max.

Both phones support 100W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and 27W reverse charging for topping up earbuds or another phone. Xiaomi says the batteries keep at least 80% of their capacity after 2,000 charge cycles.

One thing to watch: global Xiaomi models sometimes ship with smaller batteries than the Chinese versions. The Xiaomi 17, for example, went from 7,000mAh in China to 6,330mAh globally, so the European figures could differ.

Xiaomi 18 Pro vs 18 Pro Max

The two phones share the same cameras, charging speeds and software. The Pro Max adds a bigger screen, a faster chip, a larger battery and an extra speaker.

Price and availability in Ireland

Xiaomi has confirmed on its official X account that the 18 Pro series will launch globally this year. Irish and European prices and release dates haven’t been announced yet.

For reference, here’s what the phones cost in China, where they went on sale straight after launch:

Memory Xiaomi 18 Pro Xiaomi 18 Pro Max
12GB + 256GB 5,999 yuan 6,999 yuan
12GB + 512GB 6,999 yuan 7,999 yuan
16GB + 512GB 7,999 yuan 8,999 yuan
16GB + 1TB 8,999 yuan 9,999 yuan

European prices for Xiaomi flagships are usually higher than a straight currency conversion, so treat these as a guide only. We’d also advise against importing a Chinese unit: China-market phones run a different version of HyperOS without Google apps, and they usually aren’t covered by warranty in Ireland.
