How to choose the best phone as a Christmas gift
Before you look at specs, answer three questions about the person you are buying for.
- What do they do most on their phone? Photos and video point to a flagship with a strong camera system. Gaming points to a fast chip and a high refresh rate. Messaging, browsing and streaming are covered by almost any modern Android phone.
- How hard are they on phones? If their old phone has a cracked screen, a phone with high IP ratings and drop protection will save you buying another one in six months.
- How long will they keep it? Battery life and software support matter more than a few extra benchmark points. Look for a big battery and a long promise of security updates.
One more practical point: several of the new phones below do not include a charger in the box. If the person does not already own a fast USB-C charger, add one to the order so the phone can be used on Christmas morning.
Best flagship phones for Christmas 2026
1. Xiaomi 17T Pro: the best phone for most people
The Xiaomi 17T Pro is our best overall pick because it gets close to a top flagship for far less money. Its Leica camera system pairs a 50MP main sensor with a 5x periscope telephoto, so zoomed shots of kids at a school concert or a match from the stands stay sharp. The 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display runs at up to 144Hz and peaks at 3,500 nits for outdoor use.
Battery life is the other headline. The 7,000mAh silicon-carbon battery will comfortably last a full day of heavy use, and it supports 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. Inside is the 3nm MediaTek Dimensity 9500, and it is rated IP68. Price from €729 for 12GB + 256GB.
2. Xiaomi 17 Ultra: the best camera phone
If the person on your list loves photography, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is the absolute best camera you can give. The main camera uses a 1-inch sensor, the largest type used in phones, which gathers far more light at night. Next to it sits a 200MP Leica telephoto with a mechanical 75–100mm optical zoom, plus a 50MP ultra-wide.
It runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, has a 6.9-inch display, a 6,000mAh battery with 90W wired and 50W wireless charging, and IP68 protection. It is the most expensive phone in this guide at €1,355 for 16GB + 512GB, and there is no charger in the box, so budget for one.
3. Xiaomi 17: the best compact flagship
Not everyone wants a big phone. The Xiaomi 17 has a 6.3-inch OLED display, so it fits a pocket and works one-handed, but it still has the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip as the Ultra and Leica Summilux optics on the camera. A 6,330mAh battery is large for a phone this size, and it charges at 100W. Price from €899.
4. POCO F9 Ultra: the best phone for gaming
For a gamer, the POCO F9 Ultra is the phone to beat. It combines the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with a 6.9-inch AMOLED display running at up to 185Hz, the highest refresh rate in this guide. The 8,050mAh battery is huge for a flagship phone, with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging.
It is not only a gaming phone. You also get a 200MP main camera with a 50MP 5x periscope telephoto, sound tuned by Bose, Wi-Fi 7 and IP68. Price from €929. The power adapter is not included.
Best value and budget phones
5. Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G: the best value phone
The Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G is the phone we would recommend to most people with a budget under €400. Its 8,340mAh battery is rated by Xiaomi for more than two days of moderate use, and the body is rated IP66 and IP68, so it shrugs off heavy rain and a drop in the sink.
The 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display reaches 3,500 nits, there is a 50MP camera with optical stabilisation, plus NFC for contactless payments, and Xiaomi promises six years of security updates. The trade-off is video, which tops out at 1080p. Price from €389.
6. Xiaomi 15T: the best Christmas deal
Last year’s T-series phones are now heavily reduced, and the Xiaomi 15T is the standout deal. You get a Leica 23mm main camera, a 6.83-inch display, a 5,500mAh battery and 67W charging for €549, down from €649. The 512GB version is €599, down from €749.
7. REDMI 17: the best budget phone
The REDMI 17 proves you do not need to spend much for the best battery life. It packs a 7,500mAh battery, a large 6.9-inch display, a 50MP main camera and 45W charging. It is a 4G phone rather than 5G, which suits most people on a budget. Price from €209.
8. POCO C85: the best first phone for a teenager
For a first phone, the POCO C85 covers everything a teenager needs at a price that won’t hurt if it gets lost. It has a 6.9-inch display, a 6,000mAh battery, 33W fast charging, a 50MP camera, 128GB of storage and NFC. It is €125 in black, down from €149, and also comes in green.
Best rugged phones for Christmas
For anyone who works outdoors, in a trade or on a farm, a normal flagship in a thick case is still a fragile phone. Rugged phones from ulefone.ie, the authorised Ulefone reseller in Ireland, are built to IP68, IP69K and MIL-STD-810H standards, and ship from an Irish warehouse.
9. Ulefone Armor X16 Pro: the best rugged phone
The Ulefone Armor X16 Pro is the rugged phone to buy if you are not sure which to pick. It has a 10,360mAh battery that keeps going for days, 5G, a 6.56-inch 120Hz display, a 64MP Sony main camera plus a night vision camera, and a powerful built-in flashlight. It survives 2m drops and comes with a 33W charger in the box. Price €259, down from €299, and owners rate it 4.9 out of 5.
10. Ulefone Armor 27T Pro+: the best gift for tradespeople
The Ulefone Armor 27T Pro+ has a built-in FLIR Lepton 3.5 thermal camera that measures temperatures from -10°C to 450°C. That makes it a genuinely useful tool for electricians, plumbers and builders tracing leaks, faults and gaps in insulation. It also has a 10,600mAh battery with 30W wireless charging, a 50MP main camera, a 64MP night vision camera, and 5G. Price €445, down from €599.
11. Ulefone Armor Mini 20: the best small rugged phone
Most rugged phones are big and heavy. The Ulefone Armor Mini 20 has a 4.7-inch screen that fits a shirt pocket, yet still carries full IP68, IP69K and MIL-STD-810H ratings. It has a 500-lumen LED light with red and blue warning modes, a 6,200mAh battery, wireless charging, NFC and a headphone jack. Price €240, down from €259.
12. Ulefone RugKing 4 Pro: the best rugged phone under €200
The Ulefone RugKing 4 Pro gives you a 10,000mAh battery, a 6.56-inch display, a 48MP camera, NFC and full IP68, IP69K and MIL-STD-810H protection for €199, down from €239. It makes a sensible gift for a teenager who breaks phones or a backup phone for the van. Browse the full range of Ulefone rugged phones.
What about iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel?
An iPhone, a Samsung Galaxy or a Google Pixel is a perfectly good Christmas gift, and if the person already lives in the Apple ecosystem, staying with iPhone makes sense. The case for the phones above is value. For less than a standard iPhone usually costs, the Xiaomi 17T Pro gives you a Leica camera with 5x optical zoom, a bigger battery and much faster charging, while the Xiaomi 17 Ultra takes on Pro Max models for camera quality. Both have Google Gemini and Circle to Search built in for AI features. Google Pixel phones are known for computational photography and long software support, and Xiaomi now matches the support side too, with six years of security updates on the Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G.
Foldable phones are fun, whether it is a book-style Samsung Galaxy Z Fold or a Galaxy Z Flip flip phone, but even the best foldable costs more and is more fragile than a standard flagship. For a gift that needs to last several years, a well-built Android phone with a big battery is the safer choice.
