Dehumidifier Guide for Irish Homes: Damp, Mould and Drying Clothes Indoors

Ireland’s mild, wet climate means a lot of homes fight damp from October to March. Clothes drying on radiators, condensation streaming down windows in the morning, a musty smell in the spare room, black spots creeping along the bathroom ceiling: they all come back to the same thing, too much moisture in the air. A dehumidifier is the simplest way to deal with it.

What a dehumidifier does

A dehumidifier draws in room air, cools it so the moisture condenses into water, collects that water in a tank, and blows the drier air back out. Lower humidity means less condensation on cold windows and walls, which is what mould needs to grow. It also means clothes dry faster indoors and rooms feel warmer, because damp air feels colder.

The number to aim for: keep indoor humidity at around 50 to 55%. Above 60% for long periods, condensation and mould become likely. Most smart dehumidifiers let you set a target and switch off when they reach it.

Signs your home needs one

  • Condensation on windows most mornings
  • Black mould around window frames, in corners or on the bathroom ceiling
  • A musty smell in wardrobes or unused rooms
  • Clothes take more than a day to dry indoors, or smell damp afterwards
  • Peeling paint or wallpaper on outside walls

What size dehumidifier do you need?

Dehumidifiers are rated in litres of water removed per day. Be aware that this figure is measured in warm, very humid test conditions, typically 30°C and 80% humidity. In a cooler Irish home a dehumidifier will remove less than its rating, which is normal. As a guide, a 10 to 13 litre model suits most bedrooms, bathrooms, utility rooms and small apartments. For a large, very damp house, or to run one unit for the whole home, look at 20 litres or more.

Where to put it

  • Drying clothes: in the same room as the clothes airer, with the door closed. Use a clothes-drying mode if it has one.
  • Condensation: in the room where it’s worst, usually a bedroom overnight or the bathroom after showers.
  • Musty rooms: in the middle of the room, away from walls and curtains, so air can circulate.
  • Keep doors and windows closed while it runs, or it ends up drying the outdoors.

Dehumidifier or air purifier?

They solve different problems, and many homes benefit from both.

Tips to cut damp without spending a cent

  • Open bathroom and kitchen windows, or run the extractor fan, while showering and cooking, and for a while after.
  • Wipe condensation off windows in the morning instead of letting it soak into the frames.
  • Keep furniture a few centimetres off outside walls so air can move behind it.
  • Keep lids on pots when cooking.
  • Don’t block wall vents or trickle vents in windows.

FAQ

Is a dehumidifier worth it in Ireland?

For most homes that get condensation, mould or slow-drying laundry in winter, yes. It tackles the cause, excess moisture, rather than just cleaning up after it.

What humidity should my house be?

Around 50 to 55% is a good target for most homes.

Can a dehumidifier dry clothes?

Yes, and it’s one of the most popular reasons to buy one. Put it in a closed room with the clothes airer and use a clothes-drying mode if available.

How often do I need to empty it?

It depends on how damp the room is. The Xiaomi Smart Dehumidifier Lite switches off automatically when its 3L tank is full, and you can attach the included drain hose to run it continuously.

Will a dehumidifier get rid of mould?

It stops new mould growing by keeping humidity down. Existing mould needs cleaning off first.
